Getting Dirty In The Garden

Lot’s of planting and pulling weeds this week as the garden gets going.

Remembering that I have garden aprons to lessen the dirt that I bring indoors,

I rummaged through the potting shed to find this linen apron.

I designed and sewed this apron for Country Gardens Magazine a couple of years ago.

The pattern and images appeared in the Fall issue of 2014.

It was a dream come true to travel to the Better Homes And Gardens Test Garden’s and

co produce the story with my friend Kate Carter-Frederick.

I ended up having to model for the story, and though I was in the most lovely gardens,

was completely out of my element!

This image looks simple enough.

I first held a watering can.

The pot was tilted many angles.

My shirt was unbuttoned-just one more!

The pot got really heavy!

They cropped this image-perfectly!

Herb Season

Yes, fresh Herbs are back!

Prepping for a demonstration at our local library this weekend.

Using Herbs to make fresh salad dressings in 60 seconds.

Tree Hugger

“How high will the Sycamore grow?” from the song Colors Of The Wind.

They will grow pretty high!

American Sycamores grow in zone 4-9

This is a fast growing tree, up to 6 feet per year.

Mature height of 70 feet, with a width of  50 feet.

Adaptable to most soil conditions.

Golden leaves in the Fall and beautiful bark for winter interest.

In a few weeks, loggers will be on our property harvesting some mature Walnut Trees.

The trees are aged (not that there’s anything wrong with some age!) but are beginning to decline and are to close to our home.

The chemical that Walnut Trees emit, Juglone, is having negative effects on other trees and plants in our yard and garden.

Seeking a fast growing shade tree, I remembered the beautiful American Sycamores that I admired out East this past Summer.

I hope to plant a few of these stunning trees.

Must Be Allergies

I’m itching to get into the garden.

It will be weeks before plants and seeds can be dropped into the raised beds,

but getting the beds ready with new compost and some new mulch around the kitchen garden can happen just as soon as it stops snowing!

The greenhouse needs new paint and some repairs this spring,

Rabbit Run Cottage is changing it’s colors this year,

and the empty chicken coop is going to undergo some changes.

I am opening up the little garden to a few Garden Club tours this summer,

so the pressure is on!

Planning

It’s possible to block out the very cold temperatures if you began the process of planning the garden!

Several years ago I started documenting my favorite varieties with images.

Colors so vibrant you can almost smell and taste them.

If your looking for a flavorful and highly productive variety;

Here is one of my recommendations.

Heirloom Woodle Orange

This orange is nearly perfectly round and is wonderful sliced.

Small seeds and a fruit that holds together.

5 stars and a thumbs up!

Add this to your list.
